Memory is Improved with Music Training

From WebMD

Psychologist, Agnes S. Chan, PhD, at the Chinese University in Hong Kong, did a study on  group of boys ages 6 to 15 years old and found that their verbal memory increased the longer they took music lessons. But, what is even more interesting is once they stopped taking them their memory skills were unchanged. She states,

This strongly implies that the better verbal memory in children with music training is not simply a matter of differences in age, education level, or their family’s socioeconomic characteristics.
— Agnes S. Chan, PhD

This proves the lasting impact that music can have on an individual throughout their lifetime. Music is always sharpening our minds, and evolving our thought process.

MEPA Miamisburg Recap

This past weekend, Rhythm X Percussion and Wind Ensembles premiered their programs for the X16 Performance Tour at MEPA Miamisburg. Percussion premiered The Alpha, with amazing 'trees' and a new tarp from Field & Floor FX. The Winds premiered Aurora, featuring the music of John Mackey's Aurora Awakes. You can view the Percussion scores here, and the Winds scores here

After the show,  The X Academy held a clinic that was well attended by local students and educators from the Cincinnati/Dayton area. The Rhythm X design team explained and revealed how our show was created, and layered. The front ensemble demonstrated parts that sound independent, but when played together create the catchy melody you hear.

The battery then demonstrated how they are tackling a difficult design challenge this year. Each page of the show is learned with a syncopated foot timing that almost never follows a consistent pulse. This requires the players to learn the music over the syncopation or polyrhythm in the feet for every page. Battery arranger Tim Jackson discussed this logistical and educational challenge as well as how it ties into 'The Alpha' theme which often attempts to be 'first' to conquer something difficult.

Costa Ri-cap

Over the past two weeks, Rhythm X alumnus and instructor Tom Gasparrini has presented a clinic series across the country of Costa Rica, completing The X Academy's first-ever events in Latin America. The Costa Rica tour is the 8th international event of The X Academy, continuing the expansion of our global reach. Check out all the great places Tom and The X Academy visited on the map below:

While in Costa Rica, Tom visited six different schools across the country to present various clinics on marching percussion. Both Tom and the students at these schools were thrilled to share their love of music and marching percussion and learn from each other. Check out what Tom and some of the students shared about their experience below!

eXtra Access: Episode 303

The last couple of weeks at Rhythm X, Inc. has been pretty busy. Our two US competitive ensembles are working really hard to develop some pretty incredible material for their 2016 WGI shows. The X Academy hosted a clinic alongside a Rhythm X rehearsal weekend on December 19th where more than 40 marching cymbal players came to play and learn alongside the Rhythm X Plateline. The Growl has also had a few performances at the home games of The Cincinnati Bengals. Who Dey!

We're usually pretty pumped this time of year with the 2016 WGI season fast approaching. This year we seem to be more excited than ever with The Bengals playing well, the Dragons Drumline season approaching, The X Academy clinics in planning, and both our WIW and PIW shows well underway.

Check out some cool footage from last week's four-day New Year's Camp in Episode 303 of eXtra Access, presented by FJM - Fred J. Miller.
